Teeth Implant – Procedure, Types and Cost Associated
A teeth implant is basically a titanium screw that is surgically placed in the jaw bone. It serves as a replacement for the root portion of the tooth. Dental Implants are indicated to replace one, few to all teeth in the jaw.
Procedure For dental implant placement
- A dental implant may be immediately after tooth extraction or in healed bone after extraction has been done and healing has occurred. It is usually preferred to place an implant immediately after extraction to preserve as much bone volume as possible. Leaving bone as such after extraction causes a reduction in both height and width of the bone.
- The first step is to numb the area by giving local anesthesia. After anesthesia is effective, if required the decayed tooth is extracted. If the site is already of a missing tooth, a surgical inciisonis given and gum reflected to expose the underlying bone.
- The site planned for dental implant placement is then prepared to the required dimensions using surgical drills of the corresponding diameter.
- In special situations where bone volume is not sufficient to hold the implant bone augmentation procedures such as a sinus lift may be done in upper jaw or a ridge split procedure may be done.
- After the site is prepared the implant is screwed into the prepared sites by using special drivers and a wrench.
- A cover screw or a healing screw is placed on the head of the implant to prevent growth of gum tissue inside the implant.
- The Gum flap is then sutured back to place.
- The procedure might vary a bit depending on the type of implant.
Types Of Implants
Broadly the types of dental implants used today are:
Endosteal Implant:
This is the most popular variety of implant currently being used worldwide. It is placed in cancellous bone.Subperiosteal Implants:
These implants are placed on top of the bone beneath the gum tissue. Their use is very limited and limited to cases with extreme bone resorption.Basal Implant:
These are special implants that are placed in basal bone (the portion of jaw bone below the tooth sockets). They are placed and immediately loaded i.e teeth placement over implants is carried out simultaneously. Basal Implants are mechanically locked in jaw bone by bicortical screwing.
Cost Associated With Dental Implants
The cost associated with Dental implant treatment can vary substantially depending on
- The brand of the implant opted for: There are thousands of dental implant companies that make dental implants. Products of companies like Nobel Biocare, Straumann etc are considered premium and are costly relative to other companies.
