Splinting refers to “the joining of two or more teeth into a rigid unit.” In cases where a patients has loose teeth treatment by splinting can be used to join teeth together so that the excessive pressure on one single teeth is reduced and the teeth in a group can better tolerate chewing forces.
The objective of splinting:
- to create an environment where tooth movement can be limited within physiologic limits to restore function and patient comfort.
- Splinting is best viewed as a preventive treatment measure for teeth that have minimal or no bone loss, yet are clinically mobile.
- Loose teeth treatment by Splinting is usually indicated for mild to moderate tooth mobility.
When anterior teeth require splinting, tooth colored restorative resin reinforced with polyethylene fiber (Ribbond Fiber) is the material of choice. It is the same material that is used in making bullet-proof vests.
It is important to note that this modality of treatment is neither indicated nor successful in cases of extreme tooth mobility where teeth have lost significant amount of bone support. Tooth extraction is the only solution in this case.
