What Is Diastema? Understanding the Gap Between Teeth and Its Treatments
What Is Diastema?
Spaces between teeth are called diastema. Spaces may be generalized i.e. present in multiple teeth or may be localized and limited to just two teeth. When it is specifically present between two front teeth, it is called Midline diastema.
Usually the presence of diastema is purely a cosmetic problem. At times it might create functional problems to as food might get stuck in between teeth.
Causes of Gaps Between Teeth
Understanding the reason behind diastema helps in choosing the right treatment. Some of the typical causes include:
- Hyperactive Tongue Movement: A tongue that habitually pushes against the teeth can gradually cause them to move apart, leading to generalized spacing.
- Thumb Sucking: Common in children, this habit can exert outward pressure on the front teeth, causing gaps.
- Aging and Tooth Wear: As molars wear down with age, added pressure on the front teeth can push them apart.
- High Frenulum Attachment: A thick or tight band of tissue connecting the upper lip to the gum can push the front teeth apart, especially in midline diastema.
Cosmetic Concerns and Functional Challenges
Although diastema is usually harmless, many people choose to treat it for cosmetic reasons. In some cases, food may get trapped in the gaps, which can lead to gum irritation, bad breath or plaque build-up. This makes treatment important for maintaining good oral hygiene.
Treatment Options for Diastema
Cosmetic Dentistry offers several effective solutions for management of diastema
- Cosmetic bonding
Small gaps restricted to 1-2 teeth can be easily closed by bonding. Not only is this option least invasive, the results are seen immediately. However, the composite bonding tends to stain with time particularly at the joint. There is also a chance of the bonding to break or chip.
- Dental Veneers
Veneers offers a durable solution to the problem of spacing. Veneers may again be made of composite or porcelain (ceramic veneers). The results with ceramic veneers look natural and at the same time more long lasting. They are a preferred option in young patients and those looking for aesthetics.
- Dental Crowns
Crowns are a comparatively invasive option as it involves reduction of teeth in all dimensions. However they are a rough and tough option needing least maintenance and care.
- Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatment options such as braces or aligners can also be considered for those looking to move their natural teeth and covering the gap. However, this treatment modality needs time.
- Frenectomy
In cases where the problem is due to high frenum attachment, the frenum needs to be cut and trimmed also to ensure permanency of result.
