Gum problems are very common. Depending on the degree and severity of the case, different treatment modalities are available. Deep Cleaning refers to cleaning of teeth and gums below the gum margin under anaesthesia by specially available instruments.
Deep cleaning is indicated for
- Mild to moderately deep pockets in gums
- Incomplete resolution of inflammation after normal scaling and polishing procedure
- The medical condition of the patient is such that a flap surgery cannot be performed or the a patient is on blood thinners which cannot be stopped.
- Can be combined with laser treatment for better results. There are numerous studies that suggest that low level laser therapy (LLLT) not only kills the micro-organisms inside the pocket but at the same time it also encourages the growth of healthy gum tissue.
Dental Deep Cleaning Procedure
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Using special instruments designed for instrumentation below the gum level, the deposits are removed using both hand and mechanical scalers. The root surfaces are then planed to make them smooth for gum attachment (Root Planing). Depending on how comfortable the patient is, the entire mouth can be completed in a single sitting or in different appointments.
Periodontal Healing
Due to the close approach and conservative nature of the procedure, there is minimal postoperative pain or discomfort. Some post-operative sensitivity may persist for some time due to exposed clean root surfaces but it subsides with time.
